I have a huge confession to make. For much of my life, I’ve been secretly, or subconsciously, waiting for someone to save me. Though I have always had an independent personality, there has been the pervasive, underlying knowledge that when I most needed it, someone would come to my rescue. There are probably a thousand theories to explain the reasons for this. I’m sure there isn’t just one. And in a conversation with my brother, I defined it and said it – I am the hero I’ve been waiting for. I’m not sure I would have come to this if I had not brought it to the surface and given words to it.
What about you? Are you waiting for someone, something, to rescue you? Waiting for that perfect job to fall into your lap. Waiting for the perfect conditions to write a book, start your business, ask for a raise. Waiting for the perfect time to end that toxic relationship. Waiting for that perfect partner to complete you. Here that hint: You are already complete. You are your own hero.
There is no shortage of memes and motivational posters stating this. But how do you do it? It’s easy to look at a statement like “Be Your Own Hero” and think, “Yeah, I am! I’m going to go out there and do the thing that scares me the most!” Only to get back into your daily life and your subconscious takes over. And comfort. Comfort is a wonderful thing; I am not discounting it. However, if you’re waiting for a hero, then you feel you need to be saved from something. This is uncomfortable.
Where do you start? Find one thing you want to be saved from. There may be many but start with one. The most important one to you right now. Start planning. What would this look like if you started today? What steps would you take right now? Write that list. Write that plan. And then start with one step. Perhaps it’s a tiny step that seems insignificant. It is not. Every baby step is one step closer to you saving yourself. There is no knight in shining armor. There is only you. And you, you lovely, magnificent human, are enough.
